The National Football League has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
