Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.
We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about how we choose to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
