Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an ambitious start to his administration.
A Historic Figure
The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”
Adhering to Socialist Ideals
Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.
The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Sweeping Policy Agenda
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

- Free buses
- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
